What it does
Earth Power is a Ground-type special move that deals damage and has a chance to lower the target's Special Defense by one stage. It covers the same types as High Horsepower — super-effective against Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel, and Fire — but calculates damage from Special Attack, not Attack.
That distinction is what makes the move exist. A special attacker like Hydreigon with minimal Attack investment would deal negligible damage with a physical Ground move. Earth Power lets them run Ground coverage at full power on their actual offensive stat.
The SpDef drop chains well with a partner's follow-up special hit, same as Psychic or Shadow Ball's drops.
Flying-types and Levitate users are immune. Same caveat as every Ground-type move.
Who runs it
Stunfisk at 85% has Ground STAB on top of Electric-type attacks. Earth Power is its primary same-type Ground option, putting full SpA investment into a Ground hit.
Glimmora at 77% uses Earth Power to cover Electric and Steel targets that its Rock/Poison typing doesn't handle well. Its Toxic Debris passive complements the offensive pressure.
Hydreigon at 39% packs Earth Power alongside Dragon and Dark moves. Three-type coverage from a single set, no physical investment needed.
Torkoal at 37% adds it to cover Electric types — otherwise Electric-types can freely pivot into Fire with minimal concern.
Aurorus at 44% and Venusaur at 26% both add it for Steel and Electric coverage on otherwise Grass/Ice or Grass/Poison sets.
How to use it
Electric-types are the primary targets — they take super-effective damage and have no natural answer to Ground coverage. Identifying the opponent's Electric threats in team preview and planning your Earth Power user against them is sound construction.
On a SpDef drop proc, immediately pivot the partner into a special hit if possible. The multiplier on the follow-up is real.
Tips & strategy
Don't take Earth Power on a physical attacker who already has High Horsepower — they cover the same types, and a physical attacker won't get damage returns from the special move. Pick one based on which attacking stat is invested.
Flying and Levitate immunity remains the hard counter. If the opposing team is Flying-heavy, Earth Power may fire into immunity repeatedly — keep a non-Ground coverage slot ready.
