Steel/Ghost dual typing blanks a long list of threats, and 133 SpA is elite for a non-Mega. Make It Rain ability shuts down all status moves completely — Toxic, Thunder Wave, Will-O-Wisp all bounce off — making it a genuine pressure piece in BSS singles. No Mega means it has to carry its weight on raw stats alone, which it can.
Playstyle:Shadow Ball is the primary STAB nuke; Make It Rain provides coverage but its SpA −2 self-drop means it's a finisher, not a spammable main. The ability Make It Rain completely ignores status moves, letting Gholdengo hard-check entire status-based strategies. Rich Steel resistances let it tank hits and fire back. Speed 84 is workable but leaves it vulnerable to fast Dark-type revenge killers.
Make It Rain ability matters less in doubles where status moves are used sparingly, but Steel/Ghost still offers solid switch-in opportunities and 133 SpA Shadow Ball is always a threat. Without a Mega or strong spread move, Gholdengo needs deliberate team support to shine in VGC.
Playstyle:Primarily a targeted attacker in doubles — Shadow Ball snipes Psychic-types. Pairs well with Grimmsnarl for dual screens or Whimsicott for priority Tailwind to offset its middling Speed. Make It Rain can pick off weakened targets across both foes, but the SpA drop makes it a once-per-game play. Best as a secondary attacker, not a lead.
