What it does
Skill Swap exchanges the user's ability with the target's. Both sides get the other's ability. Accuracy and evasion modifiers are ignored — but if either side has Multitype or Magic Guard, the move fails entirely.
The value of Skill Swap depends entirely on which abilities are on the field. Two primary directions:
First, remove your own problematic ability. If you have an ability that does nothing in this matchup — or actively hurts you — you can pass it to the opponent and take their ability.
Second, in doubles, you can use Skill Swap on your own partner. That's legal. Swapping between allies lets you build ability combinations that aren't possible on a single Pokémon — move a powerful offensive ability onto the partner who can make use of it.
Who runs it
Wyrdeer runs it at 62%. It functions as a high-flexibility support Pokémon, and Skill Swap is the core of that flexibility — reshaping the ability layer of the field during setup turns.
Medicham at 12%. This is the most explosive application in the batch: Medicham has Pure Power, which doubles its Attack. Using Skill Swap on a partner transfers Pure Power to that partner, instantly doubling their Attack. If the receiving partner already has strong base Attack, the resulting damage output is staggering.
Espathra at 10% has its own ability interactions. Oranguru sees lower usage as a support pivot.
How to use it
In doubles, the strongest use is turn one: Medicham targets a partner with Skill Swap, partner gets Pure Power, and then immediately attacks with doubled Attack. The opponent can't respond between the swap and the hit because both happen in the same setup phase.
Using it against an opponent works when you want to strip their core ability. Take Intimidate away from an opposing physical attacker by swapping it to your side — but only if you have a swap-worthy ability to offer in return, and if the resulting configuration is favorable.
Always check for Multitype and Magic Guard before committing. A failed Skill Swap wastes a full turn.
Tips & strategy
Skill Swap deals no damage. Using it costs a full action — that cost is only worth it if the ability you gain provides value across multiple turns. A one-turn ability trade that doesn't change the flow of subsequent turns is usually a loss.
Under Trick Room, Skill Swap can pass speed-related abilities to reshape which Pokémon move first in the reversed order. Highly specific setups, but extremely potent in the right team.
The opponent can switch out to make Skill Swap hit the incoming Pokémon instead. In doubles, they can also use Protect. Account for these responses — if the most likely target Protects, have a second use plan ready.
