What it does
Chesto Berry triggers automatically when the holder falls asleep, curing the sleep instantly, once. It only cures sleep — nothing else — so keep that scope in mind.
Its entire value is one classic combo: Rest + Chesto Berry, known as ChestoRest. Start with how Rest works: it puts you to sleep for 2 turns, and in exchange it fully restores your HP and clears every status condition — burn, paralysis, poison, confusion, all wiped. The catch is those 2 sleeping turns, where you can't act at all and effectively hand the opponent two free turns.
Chesto Berry plugs that hole exactly. The instant Rest puts you to sleep, the Berry fires and cures it. The result: you wake the same turn, at full HP, with every status cleaned off, and you never pay the 2-turn sleep cost. A full heal plus a complete status wipe, for one action and one item. That's the heart of ChestoRest.
There is a cost: the Berry is one-time. Once it cures that sleep — that one Rest — it's gone. A second Rest means actually sleeping the full 2 turns.
Who runs it
Usage is modest because the Berry is tightly bound to running Rest — a Pokemon without Rest has almost no reason to hold it. The users are Pokemon that want Rest's recovery but can't afford the sleep window.
Bastiodon (5%): a wall with huge Def and Sp. Def that lives on bulk. With Rest + Chesto Berry, after it's been ground to low HP or hit with a burn or poison, it comes back to full and clean in a single action and keeps walling. For a pure defensive line, that's the key longevity tool.
Sandaconda (4%): solid bulk, same sit-and-grind plan. Rest + Chesto Berry lets it heal repeatedly across a long game and wear the opponent down with its own bulk.
Chandelure (1%) runs it rarely — an individual build, but the logic is the same: one clean full heal and status cure without getting locked asleep for two turns.
How to use it
The core point: Chesto Berry is bound to Rest. On its own it's nearly pointless — it only blocks sleep, and sleep moves like Spore or Hypnosis aren't common enough to justify an item slot just to guard against them. About 99% of its value is the Rest combo. So the prerequisite for running it is simple: your Pokemon carries Rest and you want that one window-free full heal.
The timing: when your wall or stall Pokemon is ground to low HP, or saddled with a burn, poison, or paralysis that bleeds it or slows it, you Rest — the Berry wakes you the same turn, you come back full and clean, and all the chip and status the opponent built up is wasted.
Remember it's one-time. Once it cures that sleep, the Berry is gone. Save it for the reset that matters most — don't burn Rest early just to clean off a trivial status.
Tips & strategy
The strength of ChestoRest is that it solves two problems at once: HP and status. If the opponent wants to Will-O-Wisp your physical wall or Toxic your staller to death, Rest + Chesto Berry wipes all of it in one action, and their status plan falls flat.
Don't forget the soft spot: the combo only works once. After the Berry's gone, a second Rest genuinely sleeps for 2 turns, and those turns let the opponent freely set up or bring in a counter. So a ChestoRest Pokemon isn't infinite recovery — it's one very strong reset. Spend that reset where it counts.
