What it does
Brave Bird is a Flying-type physical contact move with very high Base Power. The user takes 1/3 of the damage dealt as recoil. No secondary effects.
The recoil mirrors Flare Blitz: bigger hit, bigger HP loss. High damage output and rapid self-damage go together. In Champions, HP pools aren't unlimited, so consecutive Brave Bird strikes can push the user into danger zone fast.
Contact matters here too. Opposing Flame Body and Rocky Helmet both add on top of the recoil — the true HP cost per hit is recoil plus any contact effects that trigger.
The comparison to Dual Wingbeat: Brave Bird hits harder in a single turn, making it better when you need to secure a KO this turn. Dual Wingbeat has zero recoil and can be used repeatedly without self-damage. Which you run depends on whether maximum single-hit power or HP sustainability matters more in your build.
Who runs it
Corviknight (79%) uses this as its main physical attack. Steel/Flying typing, Flying STAB, and solid defensive bulk that partially mitigates the recoil pressure — it isn't trying to run all game, it's there to put out early pressure.
Talonflame (29%) with Gale Wings gains priority +1 on Flying moves at full HP. At full health, Brave Bird fires before most things in the game. The recoil immediately threatens the full-HP condition — once you've taken any damage or clicked Brave Bird once, the priority advantage is gone.
Hawlucha (33%) is Fighting/Flying and uses Brave Bird as its Flying STAB coverage option — highest-power Flying hit in one slot.
Skarmory (27%) is Steel/Flying and carries Brave Bird for Flying STAB output.
Altaria (18%) is Dragon/Flying and uses this as one of its Flying-type physical options.
Decidueye (11%) and Toucannon (14%) each need Flying-type physical output in their respective sets.
How to use it
Same core calculation as Flare Blitz: is this KO worth the HP? If it takes the target down, yes. If the target survives and you bled for nothing, no.
For Talonflame with Gale Wings: the full-HP priority window is only the opening turn of a battle (or before any damage has landed). Brave Bird's recoil directly destroys that condition after the first hit. Plan accordingly — Talonflame's Brave Bird priority is a first-strike tool, not a repeated click.
In doubles, target Flying-weak opponents: Fighting, Grass, Bug types where the type advantage amplifies the already-high power.
Tips & strategy
Dual Wingbeat vs. Brave Bird is a real team-building decision. They occupy different niches: Brave Bird is for sets that need maximum burst damage and can accept the HP loss. Dual Wingbeat is for sets that need sustained output over multiple turns.
Contact effects double-tax you. Knowing the opponent has Flame Body or Rocky Helmet and choosing to fire Brave Bird anyway means you've accepted recoil + burn/chip simultaneously. Sometimes it's still correct — just make the decision consciously.
Corviknight has a slightly different use case. Its high physical Defense means it sometimes clicks Brave Bird specifically to trigger contact-based effects on the opponent — using its own hit as bait. That's a niche application, but it exists because of how its defensive stats interact with recoil.
