What it does
Safeguard is a field-condition move that protects your entire side of the field from status conditions (paralysis, sleep, poison, burn, freeze) and confusion for five turns. The effect sticks on your side of the field — not the user — so switching the user out doesn't end it early.
Key mechanics to know: it doesn't cure existing status, only blocks new ones. Yawn fails immediately against a protected Pokémon — since Yawn functions as a delayed sleep mechanism, Safeguard shuts it down completely. Defog clears field effects on both sides including Safeguard, so watch for Defog users on the opposing team. Finally, self-inflicted confusion from Outrage, Petal Dance, or Thrash still applies — those are move side effects, not status attacks from the opponent.
In doubles, both your Pokémon on the field are protected simultaneously once Safeguard goes up. That's one action covering two slots for five turns.
Who runs it
Altaria is the main Safeguard user in Champions at 12%. The Champions format allows Mega Evolution, and Altaria shifts to Dragon/Fairy with significantly boosted Special Attack and Special Defense while retaining its support utility. Safeguard is its dedicated counter to status-based disruption strategies.
How to use it
Deploy Safeguard proactively — before status has been inflicted, not after. Once status is already on your Pokémon, Safeguard adds nothing for those affected. Read team preview: if the opposing team clearly relies on paralysis, sleep, or Prankster-boosted status moves, getting Safeguard up in turn 1 or 2 pays for itself many times over.
The doubles decision point: is this turn better spent using Safeguard or attacking? If the opponent's status tools represent a serious threat to your game plan, a support turn from Altaria while your attacker presses forward is usually worth it. Five turns of status immunity is a substantial tempo swing in a format where paralysis or sleep on your key attacker can flip the match.
Tips & strategy
Prankster-boosted status moves (paralysis, sleep powder, etc.) are still blocked by Safeguard. The +1 priority gets them there faster, but the protection holds regardless of priority. This is one of Safeguard's most valuable applications in doubles — it specifically counters the most annoying Prankster disruption setups.
Track the five-turn counter. If your key battles are still ahead when Safeguard is about to expire, consider refreshing it with another use. If the game is clearly wrapping up inside the window, one deployment is enough.
On Altaria specifically: its boosted Special Defense after Mega Evolution means it doesn't immediately die after using Safeguard, which gives it ongoing value on the field instead of becoming a liability once it's done supporting.
