What it does
Sharp Beak multiplies Flying-type move damage by ×1.2, unconditionally, with no HP cost, no move lock, and no item consumption. Brave Bird, Aerial Ace, Acrobatics, Air Slash — all benefit every turn.
Flying hits Fighting, Grass, and Bug types super-effectively, which are consistent presences in the Champions meta. That gives Sharp Beak holders reliable super-effective targets to work with.
Compared to Life Orb: this is the main reason Sharp Beak exists on Talonflame. Brave Bird already deals recoil to the user (1/3 of damage dealt). Combine that with Life Orb's 10% HP per move, and each Brave Bird drains a massive chunk of HP at once. More critically, Talonflame's Gale Wings ability — which gives Flying moves +1 priority at full HP — requires the holder to be at full HP to function. Life Orb immediately negates that condition the first time you attack. Sharp Beak gives ×1.2 without touching HP, keeping Gale Wings active.
Compared to Choice Band: ×1.5 but locked. When the opponent sends out an Electric or Steel-type, you're stuck. Sharp Beak keeps every non-Flying move available.
Who runs it
Talonflame (37% of its sets) is the defining Sharp Beak user. At full HP, Gale Wings gives Flying moves +1 priority — so Talonflame gets to move before almost every Pokémon in the format with Brave Bird or Acrobatics. Sharp Beak makes those priority hits harder without the HP drain that would immediately deactivate Gale Wings. This is the specific interaction Sharp Beak was built for.
Toucannon (8%) uses high-power Flying moves as primary output. Sharp Beak boosts that damage without lock or cost.
Skarmory (2%) and Decidueye (1%) round out the user list with small shares. Skarmory is primarily a defensive pivot; the Sharp Beak use case there is niche. Decidueye's 1% reflects specific builds leaning into Flying coverage alongside its Ghost STAB.
How to use it
The Talonflame game plan: stay at full HP for as long as possible to keep Gale Wings active. When you have a target that Brave Bird can KO at this HP threshold, click it. Sharp Beak-boosted Brave Bird against a Fighting or Grass target is a decisive hit — you're looking at STAB ×1.5 × type effectiveness ×2 × ×1.2 = ×3.6 total, with priority.
Brave Bird recoil math. Brave Bird deals 1/3 of damage dealt back as recoil, regardless of item. Sharp Beak increases the base damage, which also increases the recoil slightly — but it's still only one source of HP drain. Life Orb would add a second fixed source on top. The compound effect of Life Orb + Brave Bird recoil is dramatically more HP-expensive than Sharp Beak + Brave Bird recoil alone.
At Team Preview, count Fighting, Grass, and Bug targets in the opponent's team. If multiple are present, Sharp Beak has multiple turns of genuine contribution. If the opponent's team is Electric and Steel heavy, you'll spend more turns on non-Flying moves where Sharp Beak does nothing — in that case, the item is underperforming.
Tips & strategy
Gale Wings HP maintenance is the first priority, always. Any damage taken deactivates Gale Wings immediately. That means the first hit Talonflame takes in a game can be the last turn it has priority on Flying moves. Use Protect to dodge attacks in doubles or to scout moves, and don't lead Talonflame into matchups where it gets hit before it can attack. Priority only matters if you're still at full HP when it fires.
Electric and Rock are your hardest counters. Electric moves super-effectively hit Flying, and Rock hits Flying at ×2 as well. Talonflame's double weakness to Rock from its Fire/Flying typing makes it especially vulnerable to Rock Slide in doubles — one hit can take it from full to KO range, eliminating both the Gale Wings condition and the Pokémon itself. Know when to pivot out versus when to click Brave Bird.
Sharp Beak requires no active management. It fires automatically on every Flying move. That simplicity is the whole point — Talonflame already has enough to think about keeping its HP condition maintained without also tracking item usage.
