What it does
Sheer Force is precise: any move that carries a secondary effect (stat drops, status chances, flinch, etc.) gains ×1.3 power but loses that secondary effect entirely when used by a Sheer Force holder. Moves with no secondary effect are untouched — no power bonus, no change.
Examples of affected moves: Rock Slide (flinch removed, 75 → 97.5 power), Flamethrower (burn chance removed, 90 → 117), Ice Beam (freeze chance removed, 90 → 117), Earth Power (Sp. Def drop removed, 90 → 117), Focus Blast (Sp. Def drop removed, 120 → 156).
The Life Orb interaction: this is Sheer Force's signature mechanic. Normally, Life Orb deals 10% max HP recoil whenever you attack. But because Sheer Force suppresses secondary effects for boosted moves, it also suppresses the Life Orb recoil — the recoil is treated as part of the effect chain. Result: a Sheer Force + Life Orb holder using an affected move gets ×1.3 (Sheer Force) × ×1.3 (Life Orb) = ×1.69 total power multiplier with zero HP cost. Using an unaffected move still triggers normal Life Orb recoil.
Who runs it
Rampardos: 90% Sheer Force usage in Champions data — the defining Sheer Force carrier. 165 base Attack is among the highest in the game, paired with 58 Speed and 30 Sp. Def that make it extremely fragile. Under Trick Room, the slow Speed becomes an asset. Sheer Force + Life Orb + Rock Slide hits both opposing Pokémon in doubles at roughly ×1.69 effective power off 165 Attack. Very little survives.
Conkeldurr: 140 base Attack, and Sheer Force boosts moves like Hammer Arm (Speed drop removed). But 78% of Conkeldurr runs Guts in Champions — Sheer Force at 8% is an option when you want to skip the Flame Orb chip damage.
Toucannon: 10% Sheer Force usage. Bullet Seed secondary effect is stripped, boosting each seed. Niche role in Champions.
Steelix (4%) and Kleavor (5%) have minor Sheer Force usage.
How to use it
Rampardos under Trick Room: turn the 58 Speed liability into an advantage. Inside Trick Room, Rampardos moves before almost everything. Land Rock Slide for boosted double-target damage. The flinch effect is gone but the damage makes up for it.
Move selection rule: only pick moves with secondary effects for Sheer Force builds. Earthquake has no secondary effect — Sheer Force ignores it entirely, and you're wasting the ability. Check every move on your set for a listed secondary effect before finalizing the moveset.
Tips & strategy
Life Orb recoil cancel confirmation: only applies to Sheer Force-boosted moves. If your Rampardos uses Earthquake (no secondary effect), Life Orb still costs HP. Keep your set to Sheer Force-affected moves as much as possible to stay at zero recoil cost while keeping the full multiplier.
Lost utility trade-off: secondary effects aren't purely cosmetic. Rock Slide's flinch in doubles disrupts opponent timing; Flamethrower's burn chance is a real threat. Sheer Force gives up all of that for flat damage — sometimes the control tool is worth more than the power. When the secondary effect matters more for your strategy, consider a build without Sheer Force or moves without secondaries.
Rampardos's fragility: 30 Sp. Def means almost any special move ends it. In doubles, pair it with Follow Me support or get it in under Trick Room protection — without coverage, it rarely gets the chance to use that 165 Attack.
