What it does
Rock Head prevents the holder from taking recoil damage from its own moves. When a move that would normally deal recoil is used, the recoil portion simply does not happen.
The moves that matter most:
- Head Smash: base 150 power, normally 50% recoil. With Rock Head, no recoil — just 150 power.
- Double-Edge: base 120 power, normally 33% recoil. Same story.
- Take Down: base 90 power, 25% recoil cancelled.
Head Smash is the critical one. Without Rock Head, using it twice in a match can KO the user through recoil alone. With Rock Head, it is the highest-base-power physical move available with zero downside on damage output. The holder can throw it repeatedly without burning its own HP.
Two things Rock Head does not cover: Life Orb HP loss is not move recoil — it still applies. And Struggle recoil is also not affected.
Who runs it
Tyrantrum at 67% adoption. 121 base Attack, solid Rock/Dragon offensive typing. Head Smash into Dragon Claw or Earthquake covers a wide range of targets. With Rock Head removing the Head Smash tax, Tyrantrum can fire it freely against anything that does not resist Rock. Few Pokémon that lack Rock resistance survive a neutral Head Smash from a 121 Attack stat.
Aggron (31%) brings Steel/Rock dual typing and 110 Attack. Head Smash and Heavy Slam are its main damage moves. Rock Head lets it lean into Head Smash as a sustained tool rather than a gamble.
Aerodactyl (6%) at 130 Speed gets to throw Head Smash into slower targets before they can respond. Speed plus Rock Head removes a lot of the calculation that normally comes with recoil moves.
Steelix (5%) sees low adoption in this role — it tends to prefer defensive angles.
How to use it
Rock Head attackers are straightforward: pick the highest-power move available, use it, and do not worry about recoil chipping down your HP. The whole calculus of 'is it worth using Head Smash here' disappears when the cost is zero.
For Tyrantrum, the typical pattern is forward-pressure offense. Head Smash as the primary KO tool, Dragon Claw or Earthquake as coverage against Rock-resistant targets. Partner provides Tailwind or speed control when Tyrantrum needs to move first. In slower formats like Trick Room, Tyrantrum's middling Speed becomes manageable.
Pair with Choice Band if you want to maximize Head Smash's damage — 150 power with a band multiplier is exceptional. If running Life Orb, keep in mind that Rock Head does not block Life Orb chip, so the longevity benefit is reduced.
Tips & strategy
Head Smash has 80% accuracy. That is not 100%. Against a Pokémon that can KO Tyrantrum in return, a missed Head Smash ends your turn and leaves you exposed. Evaluate whether the current matchup is worth the accuracy risk before committing.
Rock Slide exists as the reliable spread option — lower power (75) but 100% accuracy and spread targeting with a 30% flinch chance. Rock Head users typically carry both: Rock Slide for consistent chip and crowd control, Head Smash as the finisher against specific targets or when you need a guaranteed KO threshold.
Ground-type moves are the primary threat. Tyrantrum and Aggron both carry Ground weaknesses, meaning an Earthquake from the right target can remove them before they can swing Head Smash. Make sure your team has Ground coverage or a Pokémon that baits Ground moves away from the Rock Head user.
