What it does
Poison Barb multiplies Poison-type move damage by ×1.2, unconditionally, with no HP cost and no lock. Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, and Gunk Shot all benefit directly.
Poison's offensive profile is tightly defined: double effective against Grass and Fairy, neutral or resisted against most everything else — and Steel-types are fully immune. That narrow super-effective spread means move lock from Choice Specs is particularly punishing: one pivot to a Steel-type and you're stuck clicking an immune move. Poison Barb gives ×1.2 while keeping your other moves available.
Compared to Life Orb: Orb is ×1.3 across all moves but drains HP each attack. For Roserade, which has limited HP, the drain accelerates how quickly it enters KO range. For Toxicroak with Dry Skin — which passively recovers HP in rain — Life Orb directly undercuts that recovery. Poison Barb fits both better.
Who runs it
Roserade (9% of its sets) uses Sludge Bomb alongside Energy Ball as its primary attacks. Poison Barb lifts its Sludge Bomb damage on Fairy and Grass targets, while the Energy Ball turns carry no HP cost.
Toxicroak (6%) is a physical attacker whose primary Poison STAB is Gunk Shot. Dry Skin recovers HP each turn in rain; Life Orb would claw some of that back every move. Poison Barb boosts Gunk Shot without interfering with the recovery loop.
Conkeldurr (2%) is primarily a Fighting attacker that occasionally slots a Poison move for coverage — the 2% Poison Barb share reflects a niche build rather than a primary use case.
How to use it
Poison Barb's game plan is focused: your Poison STAB is your dedicated anti-Fairy and anti-Grass tool; everything else gets a coverage move. At Team Preview, count Fairy and Grass types in the opponent's team. That's how many turns Poison Barb is likely to contribute.
In doubles, Sludge Wave with Poison Barb can hit multiple Fairy and Grass targets simultaneously. Fairy is common in the Champions meta, so that scenario comes up. Check that your partner isn't also hit by Sludge Wave — Steel-types and Immunity holders are safe, but most other partners are not.
Poison Barb boosts move damage only — it has no interaction with the damage dealt by the poison status condition. Don't conflate the two.
Tips & strategy
Steel-type immunity is the biggest limitation. Scizor, Aegislash, and Tinkaton all take zero damage from Poison moves. Against those, Poison Barb contributes nothing — and you can't click a Poison move at all. Have Ground, Fighting, or Fire coverage in your attacker's kit to handle Steel-types, or you'll have dead turns every time the opponent brings one in.
Fairy is common in the meta, giving Poison Barb stable targets. Hatterene, Sylveon, and Gardevoir all appear regularly in Champions. Poison STAB against Fairy types: ×2 × ×1.2 = ×2.4 effective. That's a decisive multiplier, and these matchups are why you run this item.
Knock Off permanently removes Poison Barb. Without it, your Sludge Bomb reverts to base power on Fairy and Grass targets, dropping KO probability for the rest of the game. Use Protect to scout Knock Off users before committing.
