What it does
Super Luck raises the holder's critical hit stage by 1. Base crit rate (stage 0) is 1/24, about 4.2%. At stage 1, that's 1/8 — 12.5%. Every move has a meaningful chance to crit, and over a full game that adds up.
The real power comes from stacking with high-crit moves. Night Slash and Psycho Cut both come with a built-in +1 crit stage. Combined with Super Luck, that's +2 total — a 50% crit rate. One in two hits lands as a critical. At that point it stops being a lucky bonus and starts being a mechanic you can plan around.
Critical hits don't just deal extra damage — they ignore the target's positive Defense boosts and the attacker's negative Attack drops. Your opponent set up a Swords Dance? A crit bypasses both of those Defense buffs. An Intimidate dropped your Attack? A crit ignores that penalty entirely.
Who runs it
Absol (86% usage). With base 130 Attack and access to both Night Slash and Psycho Cut, Absol is built for this setup. The 86% usage reflects that Super Luck is far and away the preferred ability on a competitive Absol.
How to use it
Lead with Night Slash or Psycho Cut. Both are +1 crit stage moves, which combined with Super Luck gives you +2 — a 50% crit rate on every hit. There's no setup required; just attack and the crit threat is already live.
If you want guaranteed crits, add Scope Lens or Razor Claw. Either item adds another +1 crit stage, reaching +3 total — 100% crit rate on every move. You give up the item slot for something like Life Orb, but the trade is a crit on every single hit, completely bypassing all stat boosts and drops for the rest of the game.
Tips & strategy
The matchup where Super Luck shines hardest is against defensive setup or when Absol's own Attack has been dropped. If the opposing Garchomp has used Iron Defense twice and boosted its Defense, a crit from Absol bypasses those Defense stages entirely. Or if an Intimidate user has dropped Absol's Attack, a crit ignores that penalty and hits at full power. Those are consistent pressure points, not lucky outcomes.
On Mega Evolution: in formats where Mega Evolution is available, Absol can Mega Evolve into Mega Absol with Magic Bounce. That's a different tool entirely — reflecting status moves back instead of hunting crits. Which form fits depends on what your team needs Absol to do.
