What it does
Speed Boost raises the holder's Speed by one stage at the end of every turn — no conditions, no cost, no move slot required. Stages cap at +6 (×4 multiplier), and every stage compounds on the last.
Here is a worked number so the impact is concrete. Sharpedo has base 95 Speed. At Lv.50 with a neutral nature, that lands around 150 real Speed. After one Speed Boost trigger, the ×1.5 stage multiplier pushes that to roughly 225 — which clears most unboosted attackers and nearly all Choice Scarf users sitting at base 100 Speed (Scarf ×1.5 on 150 real = 225; Sharpedo at +1 matches that exactly and at +2 leaves it behind). After two triggers, the effective number hits roughly 300, which outruns virtually every Choice Scarf variant that isn't built on an extreme base like Regieleki.
Every other speed tool demands something in return. Choice Scarf locks you to one move. Agility burns a turn. Tailwind requires a team slot and expires after four turns. Speed Boost runs in the background while you attack, Protect, or even take a hit. The speed banks regardless of what you do — which means surviving is the only prerequisite.
In Champions singles, the snowball is hardest to interrupt. There is no Fake Out to waste your first turn and no partner that faints to reset the board. Once a Speed Boost sweeper establishes momentum, opponents need a real structural answer, not just incidental disruption.
Who runs it
Speed Boost rewards attackers far more than support Pokémon. A support role that switches out loses every accumulated stage immediately. An attacker that stays in becomes more dangerous with each passing turn.
Sharpedo is the defining Speed Boost user in Champions. Water/Dark typing, 120 Attack, paper-thin defenses, and four-move coverage that barely has a blind spot: Crunch, Close Combat, Psychic Fangs, Ice Fang. The ability is the entire reason Sharpedo is threatening — base 95 Speed is unremarkable, but Speed Boost turns that mediocrity into a liability for the opponent. The standard build runs Focus Sash to guarantee one full turn of survival, Protect on turn one to bank a Speed stage, then attacks from turn two onward at +1. The coverage spread means almost nothing resists the full set after you choose your move.
Espathra uses the ability differently. Its base 105 Speed is already respectable, so Speed Boost pairs with Calm Mind for a double-stack: turn one you raise Special Attack and Special Defense, turn-end Speed goes up one stage, turn two you either stack again or start firing. Lumina Crash drops the target's Special Defense by two stages, so targets become progressively easier to finish as the battle continues. The alternative mode is Baton Pass: accumulate +2 or +3 Speed stages, then pass the entire Speed advantage to a slower but more powerful teammate. Espathra essentially acts as a speed launcher in that configuration.
Blaziken in Mega Evolution (holding Blazikenite, accessed via Omni Ring) gets Speed Boost locked as its Mega ability, alongside 160 Attack and Fire/Fighting coverage that has almost no structural immunity. Pre-Mega Blaziken also has Speed Boost but lower Attack makes the threat manageable. The Mega form is a different conversation — every turn it stays in, the window to trade into it safely narrows, and 160 Attack means even glancing coverage hits are decisive.
How to use it
The singles tempo is almost always the same: Protect on turn one, attack from turn two. There are exceptions — if you are clearly faster and the matchup is favorable, pressing an attack immediately can work — but in any unclear situation, Protect is correct. The reason: Speed Boost triggers at the end of the turn whether you attack or stall. The Speed stage banks either way. Trading the certain Stage +1 for a questionable first-turn attack usually loses value.
When the opponent switches on turn one, the calculus shifts. You have +1 Speed now; they have a new Pokémon in. The question to answer immediately: can you KO this switch-in in one hit? If yes, attack. If no, decide whether another Protect turn gives you +2 Speed that changes the next exchange, or whether the new matchup is bad enough that retreating is forced — remembering that retreating resets your stages to zero.
Doubles tempo is messier. Fake Out can eat your first turn (the target flinches but does not skip the full turn — you act, you just flinch). This is why Speed Boost pairs best with support that absorbs or neutralizes priority: a partner using Follow Me or Rage Powder redirects the Fake Out away from you, letting you complete turn one safely. Icy Wind from the opponent is the other problem: it lowers Speed stages by one, directly canceling one Speed Boost trigger. If the opposing team has Icy Wind available, you need to decide whether you can deal enough damage before the speed-control lands, or whether your partner can KO the Icy Wind user before it fires.
For Stat Points allocation: Champions caps each stat at 32 points from a 66-point total. Sharpedo's standard split is 32 Attack / 32 Speed with the remaining two in HP. Do not copy Smogon's 252/252 EV spreads — those are mainline numbers, not Champions numbers.
Tips & strategy
Count stages, do not guess. Speed Boost triggers at the end of the turn, so after your first turn you act at +1, after your second turn at +2. Before committing to an attack, calculate whether your current stage actually outruns the opponent. If the target is running Choice Scarf on a base-100 Speed Pokémon, their effective real Speed is approximately 225. Your Sharpedo needs to hit +1 Speed (≈225) to tie and +2 (≈300) to safely lead. Know the threshold, use Protect until you clear it, then commit.
Baton Pass relay: Speed stages transfer intact through Baton Pass. Espathra accumulating +2 or +3 Speed and passing to a slow wallbreaker creates an immediate threat from a Pokémon the opponent had no reason to fear earlier. Slower in doubles — the field pressure makes setup harder — but in singles, the relay can be executed more cleanly because there is only one opponent to outmaneuver at a time.
Common mistake autopsy — switching out too early: This is the single most frequent beginner error with Speed Boost archetypes. The situation feels slightly unfavorable, the instinct says retreat, and the player switches out. Stages drop to zero. Next time the Pokémon comes back in, accumulation starts over from scratch. The correct framing is: if I Protect right now, do I survive to a turn where my Speed advantage is decisive? If yes, stay in. The only situations where retreating is genuinely correct are when the Sash is already broken, the opponent has a clear KO path, and no amount of Speed accumulation changes that outcome.
What stops Speed Boost:
- Trick Room: the direct structural counter. Flipping Speed order means every accumulated stage becomes a liability — a +6 Speed Boost user moves last under Trick Room. Mimikyu is one of the more common Trick Room setters and comes with Disguise to guarantee the setup even into an attack. If Team Preview shows a Trick Room threat, keep your Speed Boost sweeper in the back until Trick Room expires (four turns), then deploy.
- Priority moves: Sucker Punch, Fake Out, and Quick Attack ignore Speed stages entirely. Against a Speed Boost user whose Sash is already broken, one priority hit ends the game plan regardless of how many stages it accumulated. Frail Speed Boost users are particularly exposed to this because their defensive stats rarely absorb even neutral priority.
- Speed drops: Icy Wind and similar moves apply a −1 Speed stage, directly canceling one trigger. Two consecutive Icy Wind hits erase two turns of accumulation. Note that in Champions, Thunder Wave paralysis has a 12.5% full-stop chance (down from 25% in standard Scarlet/Violet) — it still halves the paralyzed Pokémon's Speed stat, but the disruption is more modest than players used to mainline SV expect.
- Direct KO before snowball: the cleanest answer. Most Speed Boost users have shallow defensive stats by design. A super-effective move through a broken Sash ends the game plan immediately, no matter what stage count was building. This is the underlying reason that Protect on turn one — ensuring Sash stays intact — is almost always the right call.
