What it does
Solid Rock applies a ×0.75 multiplier to all super effective damage the holder receives. A 4× weakness becomes a 3× hit; a 2× weakness becomes a 1.5× hit. Neutral and resisted moves are completely unaffected.
Feel the difference in real numbers. Rhyperior has base 115 HP and 130 Defense — genuinely bulky. But it carries a 4× weakness to both Water and Grass. Without Solid Rock, a Water move at 4× effectiveness is usually a one-shot. With it, the effective multiplier drops to 3×, and suddenly Rhyperior's raw bulk can push that hit into 'survives with some HP left' territory. That gap — certain KO versus potential survival — is the entire point.
Solid Rock only touches super effective hits. Everything else ignores it entirely.
Who runs it
Rhyperior uses Solid Rock at 77% in Champions. It's a Rock/Ground type with a 4× weakness to both Water and Grass, two of the most common offensive types in competitive play. Its bulk is real — 115/130 physical — but that doesn't matter if a super effective hit bypasses it entirely.
Solid Rock converts a large number of those matchups from 'instant KO' to 'maybe survives'. That survival means Rhyperior can threaten damage back, force the opponent to make decisions, and stay on the field longer than its weakness chart suggests it should.
The other notable ability on Rhyperior is Lightning Rod, which redirects Electric moves and blocks them — useful in doubles for supporting Electric-weak teammates. Reckless exists but sees minimal use; the survivability from Solid Rock is almost always worth more.
How to use it
Solid Rock is passive damage reduction — nothing to activate. What you're managing is the decision of when to keep Rhyperior on the field versus when to switch.
The instinct is to switch out the moment you see a Water or Grass attacker. But Solid Rock makes staying in a real option in some scenarios. The key is knowing the actual damage numbers: what's the opposing Pokémon's Special Attack, what move are they likely clicking, and does the damage calc land in the 'survives' range with Solid Rock factored in? Go in with numbers, not gut feeling.
Tips & strategy
Solid Rock forces the opponent to recalculate. They can't assume a Water or Grass hit is a guaranteed KO — they have to check whether they need a boosted item, two attackers stacking damage, or a higher Special Attack user to secure the KO. That's extra decision-making overhead on their side, and it sometimes leads to suboptimal plays.
In doubles, two special attackers hitting Rhyperior simultaneously can still break through Solid Rock if the numbers add up, so be careful about staying in against coordinated spread pressure.
Solid Rock does nothing against status moves, indirect damage, or field-setting moves. Opponents who route around direct combat — using Trick Room, weather, or status — bypass the ability entirely.
