What it does
Shield Dust blocks the secondary effects of moves that target the holder. That means the extra effect — the one that triggers after the damage on a random roll — doesn't happen.
Concrete examples: Air Slash's 30% flinch doesn't proc. Flamethrower's 10% burn doesn't trigger. Thunderbolt's 10% paralysis, Blizzard's 10% freeze, Psybeam's 30% confusion — all blocked. These are 'secondary' effects because they're incidental to the move's main purpose.
What isn't blocked: moves whose primary purpose is the status effect. Will-O-Wisp burns as its main effect, not as a side effect — Shield Dust does nothing against it. Same for Thunder Wave. Stat drops that are the primary effect (like Charm's -2 Attack) also aren't blocked.
In doubles, spread moves are everywhere. Rock Slide, Heat Wave, Discharge — all of them have secondary effect rolls that can disrupt your turn. Shield Dust removes that disruption for the holder without costing any move slots or item slots.
Who runs it
Vivillon: Only 2% of Vivillon in Champions use Shield Dust. Choosing it means giving up the Sleep Powder accuracy boost from Compound Eyes, which is a significant cost. This niche makes sense in specific team contexts or against particular meta reads.
How to use it
Shield Dust is entirely passive — no activation, no setup required. The value shows up when your opponent's spread moves land on Vivillon and the secondary effect roll simply doesn't happen. That 30% flinch from Rock Slide is gone. The 10% burn from Heat Wave doesn't roll.
The practical benefit is consistency: Vivillon won't randomly lose its turn to a flinch at a critical moment. Rock Slide already threatens Vivillon with ×4 damage — getting flinched on top of surviving would be a double loss. Shield Dust removes the flinch half of that scenario, at least.
If your team has sleep delivery through another route and doesn't need Sleep Powder to be the primary win condition, Shield Dust lets Vivillon function as a more stable support piece without relying on move accuracy.
Tips & strategy
Picking Shield Dust means Sleep Powder drops back to 75% accuracy. That's the real cost. Whether the spread move secondary effect protection outweighs that depends entirely on the matchups you're preparing for. If your opponents rarely use secondary-effect spread moves, Shield Dust does almost nothing. If the meta is full of Rock Slide users and spread Discharge cores, the protection is real.
Vivillon's ×4 Rock weakness is a bigger threat than any secondary effect. Shield Dust stops the flinch but not the massive damage. Against teams with Rock coverage, Vivillon needs careful positioning regardless of which ability it runs.
Shield Dust is a metagame read more than a general-use pick. If you've scouted the field and secondary effects are a consistent problem, it earns its slot. In most games, Compound Eyes with near-guaranteed sleep is the stronger default.
