What it does
Shed Skin checks at the end of each turn: if the holder has a major status condition — Burn, Poison, Paralysis, Sleep, or Freeze — there is a 30% chance it clears. No status, nothing happens. Confusion is not a status condition and is never cured by this ability.
The 30% per-turn number matters less than its cumulative effect. If you stay in with paralysis for multiple turns, the probability of at least one cure happening grows fast: three turns gives you about a 66% chance of at least one clear, five turns pushes past 83%. This ability is not a guaranteed answer to any one status, but over a prolonged game it provides genuine resilience.
Critically, nothing you do influences the trigger. It fires at exactly 30% probability per turn, period. You cannot force it, cannot save it, cannot predict it.
Who runs it
Sandaconda (7% usage) is the relevant carrier in the current format. Its core gameplan involves setting up with Coil — boosting Attack, Defense, and Accuracy in one move. Shed Skin's contribution here is invisible: because the item slot doesn't need to hold Lum Berry, Sandaconda can carry something that improves its damage output instead. The tradeoff is accepting probabilistic status recovery instead of guaranteed one-turn recovery. If an opponent leads with Thunder Wave specifically to disrupt the Coil setup, Shed Skin might not bail you out on turn one — but it might on turn three.
Arbok (0% usage) barely registers in the Champions format and Shed Skin is mostly irrelevant there.
How to use it
Think of Shed Skin as insurance, not immunity. The Shed Skin holder can afford to stay in the field after taking a status, working through its gameplan while waiting for the cure to eventually land — rather than immediately switching out to preserve momentum.
This matters most when your Shed Skin user is in the middle of a setup sequence or a war of attrition. If Sandaconda is at Coil +2 and takes a paralysis, the right play is usually to stay in and keep stacking rather than bail. The 30% per turn eventually catches up with the opponent's attempt to disrupt.
When to cut the stay short: if the opponent can knock you out this turn, switching out beats dying. Shed Skin removes the status; it does nothing to slow down incoming damage. Don't let 'waiting for the cure' turn into 'taking an avoidable KO.'
Tips & strategy
Extend your time on the field deliberately when you're statused — every additional turn is another 30% roll. If you're at turn three and haven't cured yet, you're now about 66% cumulative through the process. Leaving early resets that window to zero.
Have a backup plan for when Shed Skin simply doesn't fire. This ability doesn't guarantee anything. If Sandaconda's Coil setup gets interrupted by a status that lingers for four turns without clearing, your opponent has had four free turns to adjust. Know who on your team picks up if the setup fails.
Shed Skin does not cure confusion. If an opponent uses Swagger alongside a status, the confusion component persists regardless of whether Shed Skin triggers.
