What it does
When a contact move hits a Pokémon with Rough Skin, the attacker loses 1/8 of its own max HP. This happens every time contact is made, regardless of how much damage was actually dealt.
Contact is a property of the move, not the type. Close Combat is contact; Earthquake is not. Multi-hit contact moves trigger Rough Skin once per hit — three hits from a move means three separate 1/8 deductions.
Rocky Helmet stacks on top: 1/8 from Rough Skin plus 1/6 from the item equals roughly 30% HP lost per contact. That's the Garchomp build that makes physical attackers bleed out on the approach.
Who runs it
Garchomp (94%) is the primary Rough Skin user in Champions. Base 125 Attack, 102 Speed, 108 HP — it's already a top-tier physical attacker on its own. Add Rough Skin plus Rocky Helmet and every opponent who clicks a physical move against it loses about 30% HP. Physical attackers can't just grind through it; they pay too much. The combination turns Garchomp into a two-way attrite machine — threatening the opponent while punishing anyone who tries to challenge it directly.
Sharpedo (0%) carries Rough Skin but sits at 0% usage in Champions, indicating it doesn't currently hold a position in top-level play.
How to use it
The value of Rough Skin comes from changing the opponent's attack decisions. A physical attacker that wants to click Close Combat on Garchomp has to factor in the 1/8 recoil (plus Rocky Helmet if present) — sometimes that pushes them toward targeting the partner instead, or waiting for a support answer before committing.
In doubles, this passive pressure is even more relevant. The opponent has to actively weigh 'hit Garchomp and lose HP' against 'ignore Garchomp and let it attack freely.' Neither option is comfortable, which is where Rough Skin creates real value.
Tips & strategy
Rough Skin only activates on contact moves. Special attackers bypass it entirely — no damage, no chip. If your opponent is running special coverage against Garchomp specifically, Rough Skin contributes nothing on those exchanges.
Protective Pads negates contact-based effects including Rough Skin. Watch for opponents running this item if your strategy depends on the chip.
Iron Barbs is mechanically identical — same 1/8 chip on contact. Different ability name, same effect, just distributed across different Pokémon.
