What it does
Regenerator triggers the frame the user leaves the field, restoring exactly 1/3 of max HP. It is not end-of-turn recovery — it resolves during the switch, before the incoming Pokémon even lands.
The worked number that makes it click. Take Slowbro with base 95 HP, Lv50, 28 Stat Points invested (saving 4 for other stats) — real HP lands around 167. One-third is 55 points. If an opponent deals a non-KO hit dropping it to 60% (~100 HP remaining), switching out immediately brings it back to 155 HP (~93%). That hit basically happened for free. Add two turns of Leftovers beforehand and it re-enters at almost full health.
The strategic implication runs deeper than raw numbers. In Champions, Stat Points are capped at 66 total with a 32-per-stat ceiling — you cannot max HP and both defenses simultaneously. Regenerator bridges that gap. You skip the last few HP points, invest them offensively or in Speed, and let switching handle the recovery. The ability effectively converts positioning decisions into healing currency.
Who runs it
Trick Room setters and support pivots
Slowbro and Slowking are the definitive users. Both want to set Trick Room, pivot out while the field is fast, then come back in to re-establish it — a loop that triggers Regenerator naturally every cycle. About 68% of Slowbro and 57% of Slowking run it over Oblivious. Standard sets of Trick Room + Scald + Future Sight + Protect are built around this rotation; every exit is recovery, and Future Sight deals damage even after they've left the field.
Attrition walls
Toxapex chooses Regenerator at roughly 88% usage. Its gameplan — Baneful Bunker + Toxic + Infestation — demands surviving many turns while poison chip accumulates on the target. Rotating out between poison cycles tops off its HP, stacking with Recover and Leftovers for three layers of recovery. Toxapex also happens to be immune to both Stealth Rock chip (Poison/Steel typing) and Toxic Spikes, so switching costs it almost nothing.
Offensive pivots that need longevity
Hydrapple (~72% Regenerator usage) has the attack investment to threaten real damage but a relatively modest HP stat. Without recovery, it gets chipped out over the course of a game. Regenerator lets it hit, rotate out, come back at usable health, and repeat — an offensive motor rather than a passive wall.
Reuniclus (~59% Regenerator) splits with Magic Guard depending on the metagame. The Regenerator build prioritizes turn economy and longevity over hazard immunity; the Magic Guard build leans harder into no-recoil Life Orb.
How to use it
The mindset is simple to state and hard to internalize: switch when you choose to, not when the opponent forces you to. The heal only matters if you're the one picking the moment.
Singles turn pattern
Turn 1: Slowbro sets Trick Room. Opponent deals a non-KO hit — it drops to 70%.
Turn 2: Opponent brings in a fast attacker. You switch Slowbro out. It recovers 33% on exit, re-entering ~100%. Your faster attacker comes in to deal with the threat.
Turns 3–4: Your attacker handles the matchup.
Turn 5: Swap Slowbro back in at nearly full health and reset Trick Room. From the opponent's perspective, 30% damage just vanished.
Each full rotation saves a use of Recover, which directly extends your PP across long games. In a 20-turn game, three rotations can free up three Recover PP — meaningful when the opponent is stalling for a PP war.
Doubles adjustments
In doubles your partner is exposed for the entire turn you spend switching. That cost is real. Regenerator users in doubles lean heavier on Protect — wait a turn, read the opponent's target, then decide whether rotating is worth leaving your partner vulnerable. Toxapex typically uses Wide Guard to shield the team, then rotates out the following turn when it's safer. Slowbro often sets Trick Room and immediately pivots out before the opponent can threaten it — the HP recovered on exit makes it realistic to send back in for a second room without using Recover in between.
Stealth Rock math
If Stealth Rock is up in singles, every switch-in costs HP. For a neutral-typing switch-in the tax is 1/4 max HP. Regenerator gives back 1/3 on the way out — net gain is +1/12 max HP across the full cycle even through rocks. The rotation is still worth it. Toxapex is immune to Stealth Rock chip entirely, making it one of the best hazard-environment Regenerator abusers. Slowbro does eat the 1/4 chip, so track accumulation carefully if multiple entry hazard layers are present.
Tips & strategy
The timing mistake — the most common beginner autopsy
Players new to Regenerator often switch out when they're at 85–90% health — feeling like it's "smart positioning." The recovery is a fixed 1/3 of max HP regardless of current HP. Switching at 90% brings them to 100%. That switch accomplished nothing beyond positioning; the healing value was completely wasted because there was almost no deficit to fill.
The fix: wait until HP is below ~65% before rotating. That way the full 33% recovery lands in a place that actually matters. At 50% health, rotating out brings you to 83% — that's a meaningful difference. At 90%, you gained maybe 10% when you could have pressured the opponent for one more turn instead.
The inverse mistake: rotating at 10% HP. You re-enter at ~43%, and a sharp opponent who predicted the switch can KO you on re-entry with a mid-power move. If you're that low, either use Recover first to reach safer HP, or go in accepting that your opponent likely reads the rotation.
What turns it off — the named counters
Trapping shuts Regenerator down completely. Shadow Tag users like Gothitelle prevent switching entirely — the trigger never fires. Notably, Toxapex (Regenerator's most durable user) is also one of the most desirable trapping targets precisely because it's so hard to wear down otherwise. When bringing a Regenerator core, always scout for trapping threats and identify a path out.
The other hard counter is the one-shot. A Pokémon capable of threatening an OHKO on the Regenerator user removes the switching window entirely. High-powered attackers, particularly Mega-evolved Pokémon with dramatically boosted Attack or Special Attack, bypass all of Regenerator's benefit by denying the rotation outright. Regenerator cores need teammates who can threaten or deter those attackers.
Burn interaction in the Champions ruleset
In Champions, status effects are weaker than in standard rulesets: Paralysis full-stop is 12.5% (not 25%), Sleep lasts ≤3 turns, and Freeze thaws at 25% per turn with a 3-turn hard cap. Burn damage still ticks each turn at 1/16 max HP per turn — but the Regenerator math favors switching out aggressively. One rotation recovers 1/3 max HP (about 5.3× the burn tick per turn). A burned Slowbro left on the field loses HP every turn with no upside; the same Slowbro rotated out immediately recovers 33%, wiping out several turns of accumulated burn damage in a single action. The lesson: when a Regenerator user gets burned, find the rotation as soon as it's safe — don't let burn chip compound while trying to squeeze one more turn of offense.
