What it does
Overgrow activates at or below 1/3 maximum HP and multiplies Grass-type damage by ×1.5. Resets on switch-out or recovery above the threshold. Identical trigger condition to Blaze and Torrent.
Grass-type coverage hits Water, Ground, and Rock — all common defensive types in doubles. That makes the boost more contextually useful than it might first appear, especially on Pokémon that already use Grass as a primary attack type. Giga Drain at low HP under Overgrow both threatens real damage and recovers HP — though recovering above the 1/3 mark would shut Overgrow off, so the recovery is a double-edged factor.
Who runs it
Torterra (38%) and Meowscarada (34%) are the highest adopters. Torterra runs a physical Ground/Grass dual route and occasionally reaches Overgrow range due to its bulk. Meowscarada has high Speed (base 123) and naturally outspeeds most targets — at low HP, Flower Trick with the Overgrow boost is its best Grass output. Decidueye (20%) hits Ghost/Grass angles. Venusaur (2%) usually prefers Chlorophyll for sun teams. Serperior (4%) has Contrary as a far more impactful competitive option. Chesnaught (2%) similarly runs other abilities for its intended role.
How to use it
Same framework as Blaze and Torrent: when you're at low HP, evaluate whether you can land one boosted Grass move before fainting. Faster Pokémon have the advantage — they often move first and get the hit off. Slower ones face the 'can I survive one more hit' question.
Giga Drain is the priority pick under Overgrow since it deals damage and heals simultaneously. The recovery matters less at true low HP, but it can occasionally pull you above the threshold and keep the Pokémon alive for another turn.
Meowscarada's high Speed means it naturally moves first against most targets. Flower Trick under Overgrow is the cleanest use — it always crits, and the ×1.5 boost makes the damage count against Water, Ground, and Rock types.
Tips & strategy
Grass-types carry a lot of weaknesses (Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug, Poison — five in total). At low HP they're often staring at several super-effective options from the opponent. Whether you get the Overgrow-boosted move off depends entirely on the matchup and the speed comparison at that moment.
The conclusion shared across Blaze, Torrent, and Overgrow: use these Pokémon for their stat spread, typing, and movepools. Treat the ability as a surprise factor at low HP, not a core gameplan element.
