What it does
Oblivious grants two immunities: the holder cannot be confused, and Taunt has no effect on it whatsoever.
Confusion matters little in the current VGC meta. The real payoff is the Taunt immunity. Taunt forces a target to use only damaging moves for two to three turns — which shuts off Icy Wind, Tailwind, Protect, Trick Room, and anything else in the support toolkit. Fast Taunt users like Incineroar or Whimsicott are a standard way to dismantle support-heavy teams, and Oblivious turns that line completely off for the holder.
One thing it does not cover: Encore, Disable, and other disruption moves still land normally. Taunt immunity is not blanket disruption immunity — just one wall removed from your opponent's options.
Who runs it
Mamoswine runs Oblivious at 85% adoption. Its job is to slow the field with Icy Wind and threaten Earthquake spread damage. Taunt shutting down Icy Wind is the obvious counter — Oblivious makes that counter nonexistent. The mammoth executes its speed-control plan regardless of what the opposing lead brings.
Slowbro (32%) and Slowking (42%) are slow, bulky supporters whose main role often includes setting up Trick Room. Taunt is the primary counter to Trick Room setters — lock them into attacking and the room never goes up. Oblivious lets either one set Trick Room even into a Taunt lead, which matters greatly for Trick Room archetype teams.
Salazzle (28%) uses Oblivious to keep its status-spreading moves accessible, but the lower adoption rate suggests the other ability choices compete more there.
How to use it
With Mamoswine, just lead into opponents who would normally Taunt you and execute your spread plan. The opponent either has to use a different move or accept that Taunt is wasted. Either outcome benefits you — a wasted Taunt turn is a free Icy Wind.
With Slowbro or Slowking on a Trick Room team, Oblivious removes the easiest defensive answer to your setup. Your opponent now has to commit to actually KOing the setter before the room goes up, which costs them an attack action and gives your partner more room to maneuver.
Tips & strategy
Oblivious is most valuable the more your team depends on non-damaging moves. A pure attacker rarely needs it. A support anchor that the whole team revolves around — like Mamoswine's Icy Wind — gets real mileage from removing Taunt as a threat vector.
Watch out for Encore and Disable. A Taunt-immune Mamoswine can still get Encored into Icy Wind every turn, which neutralizes the speed drop you are trying to control. Having a pivot or a switch option in the back helps here. Lum Berry is also a reliable item if the team needs to resist both Taunt and other disruption in the same game.
