What it does
Mold Breaker means the holder's moves ignore abilities on the target that would otherwise prevent or reduce damage. The three most relevant applications:
- Levitate: normally makes the holder immune to Ground moves. Mold Breaker turns Earthquake into a normal hit against Levitate users.
- Sturdy: normally keeps a full-HP Pokémon alive at 1 HP from any hit that would KO it. Mold Breaker removes that safety net — one-hit KO moves resolve normally.
- Wonder Guard: normally only super-effective moves deal damage. Mold Breaker overrides it entirely.
Mold Breaker does not suppress offensive-boosting abilities like Huge Power — those don't block moves, they enhance the user. It's specifically the defensive-prevention side that gets overridden.
When a Mold Breaker Pokémon enters the field, a message displays: the opponent knows immediately. You can't hide it.
Who runs it
Tinkaton (69%) is the top Mold Breaker user. Steel/Fairy typing is solid, and Mold Breaker lets its Steel attacks land on Levitate users that would otherwise be immune to Ground moves from teammates — expanding coverage coverage without the usual gaps. Excadrill (14%) runs an Earth-type offense route; Levitate was its single biggest coverage blindspot, and Mold Breaker removes it entirely. Rampardos (10%) has massive physical Attack but moderate Speed; Mold Breaker ensures its KO-range hits don't get absorbed by Sturdy. Hawlucha (2%) and Pangoro (1%) see lower adoption. Basculegion (0%) rarely uses Mold Breaker.
How to use it
The primary use is identifying Levitate users in the opponent's team and making sure your Mold Breaker Pokémon is in position for the Ground move. In doubles, Earthquake is the most common spread Ground move — Mold Breaker makes it connect against the Levitate user that would normally absorb it for free.
Against Sturdy Pokémon, Mold Breaker removes the 1 HP safety net. Pair that with a high-damage move in KO range and the exchange resolves cleanly.
Entry broadcasts the ability. The opponent adjusts — they may not bring the Levitate Pokémon to a position where it gets hit. Read that adjustment and use it to predict their next move.
Tips & strategy
Mold Breaker's value depends entirely on whether the opponent's team has relevant defensive abilities. Against a team with no Levitate, Sturdy, or Wonder Guard, Mold Breaker is a passive ability that does nothing. Confirm there's something to break before selecting a Mold Breaker Pokémon into a matchup.
The best Mold Breaker Pokémon in this group work because the Pokémon itself is competitively strong — Tinkaton's typing and Excadrill's offense. Mold Breaker completes their coverage; it doesn't carry them. Pairing a strong Pokémon with Mold Breaker that actually has relevant targets is the right way to use it.
