What it does
Gooey triggers whenever a contact move connects against Goodra, dropping the attacker's Speed by 1 stage. The trigger happens after damage, so even if the hit knocks Goodra out, the Speed drop still applies. A single stage drop reduces the attacker's Speed to 2/3 of its original value — enough to flip speed ties or strip away priority positioning for the next turn.
Who runs it
Goodra is the only relevant carrier here (roughly 20% usage). It functions as a special tank with 90 base HP and 150 base Special Defense. The Gooey set specifically targets physical speed-oriented attackers: anything that relies on contact moves to deal damage and maintains turn order through raw Speed gets punished the moment it touches Goodra.
How to use it
Position Goodra across from physical attackers that depend on contact moves. When they swing, they slow themselves down. In doubles, that speed drop often shifts turn order in your favor the following turn. Pair Goodra with an Assault Vest to shore up its Special Defense so it survives long enough to absorb multiple hits and trigger Gooey more than once. The key limit: Gooey only triggers on contact moves. Special attacks and non-contact physical moves like Earthquake bypass it entirely.
Tips & strategy
Avoid running Gooey on Goodra in a Trick Room team — slowing the opponent down means they move last under Trick Room, which helps them, not you. Also scout whether the opponent's physical attackers use contact moves at all before committing to this set. If the meta leans heavily on special attackers or non-contact physical moves, Sap Sipper becomes the stronger option for Goodra. The payoff for Gooey comes specifically from punishing fast physical contact leads.
