What it does
Wood Hammer is a Grass-type physical move with very high Base Power and 100% accuracy. The recoil is 1/3 of the damage you dealt — lower than Head Smash's half, but still meaningful over several turns. Perfect accuracy is a genuine advantage: you never waste a turn missing.
High-Base-Power Grass physical moves are rare. Against Water and Rock types that Grass hits for double damage — both common in doubles — Wood Hammer is the cleanest path to a one-shot or two-shot KO on a physical Grass attacker. Fire, Flying, Bug, Poison, and Dragon types resist Grass, so know your matchup before committing.
Who runs it
Torterra at 63% is the primary user. Grass/Ground typing with solid physical Attack — Wood Hammer covers the Water and Rock threats that don't fold to Ground STAB. Wide combined coverage makes Torterra a reliable doubles attacker.
Chesnaught at 31% is Grass/Fighting with high physical Attack. Wood Hammer is its main damage output on the Grass side. Good physical bulk means Chesnaught can take some recoil across multiple turns.
Trevenant at 24% uses it alongside Ghost-type tools. Abomasnow at lower usage pairs it with Ice coverage.
How to use it
Spot a Water or Rock type on the other side and hit it. 100% accuracy means you don't need to factor in miss probability. Track your HP — after two or three uses, recoil starts limiting what your user can do next.
In doubles, both targets are visible. Focus Wood Hammer on whichever Grass-weak target is the higher-value KO. If neither opposing Pokémon is Grass-weak, look at your other moves first.
Partner-side recovery — Heal Bell, or similar — extends how many times the user can click Wood Hammer without going into dangerous HP territory.
Tips & strategy
Under Trick Room, slow users like Torterra act first. 100% accuracy at high Base Power in a reversed Speed order is stable, consistent damage output — no accuracy RNG to worry about.
Grass plus Ground coverage out of Torterra hits a wide range of targets. When the opponent has no Grass-weak Pokémon, lean on the Ground STAB instead and save Wood Hammer for when it 2× hits something.
Thick Fat ability halves Grass damage — if the opponent fields a Thick Fat user, Wood Hammer's effective output drops hard. Switch to a different coverage move.
