What it does
Twin Beam is a Psychic-type special move that always hits twice. Each strike is calculated independently — its own damage roll, its own crit check. That independence is where the move's unique properties live.
Most practically: it breaks Focus Sash and Sturdy. Both of these are 'survive one hit at full HP' mechanics. The first hit of Twin Beam triggers the sash, leaving the target at 1 HP. The second hit lands while it's at 1 HP and finishes it. Neither mechanic has the ability to block a second consecutive hit after activating. That's a reliable answer to a common defensive tool, which is not something most Psychic-type moves can claim.
Each hit also has an independent crit chance and an independent accuracy roll. The accuracy per hit is 100%, so both hits always land — unlike lower-accuracy multi-hit moves like Rock Blast, there's no 'first hit misses and second hit never happens' risk.
Psychic-type: super-effective on Fighting and Poison; not very effective (×0.5) on Psychic and Steel; no effect (0×) on Dark.
Who runs it
Farigiraf at 17% usage is the main carrier. It's Normal/Psychic-type, so Twin Beam gets STAB. Farigiraf typically mixes support and offense, and Twin Beam lets it threaten Focus Sash holders without needing a separate coverage move dedicated to them.
Farigiraf's Armor Tail ability blocks opponents from using priority moves against its partner — Fake Out, Jet Punch, and others can't target Farigiraf's ally when Farigiraf is on the field. That doubles-specific defensive ability makes Farigiraf a niche but functional team slot; Twin Beam is its teeth.
How to use it
The Focus Sash scenario is the highest-value use case. If you know or strongly suspect the opponent has a Focus Sash on a frail fast Pokémon, Twin Beam bypasses it cleanly — no second-guessing needed, no 'maybe I hit hard enough' worry.
Against full-HP bulky targets, the combined two-hit damage is roughly comparable to a single-hit move of lower power — you need to calculate whether it reaches the damage threshold you need. It's not a big-damage nuke; it's a reliable two-tap with situational breaking utility.
Tips & strategy
Air Balloon pops on the first hit and the second hit lands normally on the Pokémon — another Breaking bonus that single-hit moves don't get.
Dark is a full stop — zero damage. Steel resists Psychic (×0.5). Ghost-type Pokémon are not immune to Psychic — only Normal and Fighting are blocked by Ghost. Pre-game, check if the opponent runs Ghosts that would wall this.
The two independent hits mean each one triggers contact effects separately (if it were a contact move). Twin Beam is not a contact move, so this isn't relevant for Rocky Helmet, but it does mean each hit is a separate damage instance for effects that care about instances (like Ice Scales damage halving — each hit is halved independently, not the combined total).
