What it does
Lumina Crash is a Psychic-type special move with 100% accuracy and a 100% chance to drop the target's Special Defense by two stages on contact. Two stages, not one — that means the target's Special Defense is roughly halved for the rest of the match (until it switches out or uses a cleansing move). This isn't a lucky proc; it happens every single hit.
That distinction changes how you evaluate the move entirely. You're not choosing between 'STAB Psychic that deals damage' and 'some support option'. You're getting STAB damage and a structural Special Defense drop in the same action. In doubles, if your partner is a special attacker too, the -2 drop applies to their move in the same turn — Lumina Crash first, then partner cleans up with significantly more damage than it would have dealt otherwise.
Psychic-type covers Fighting and Poison super-effectively. Steel-types are immune, Ghost-types are immune — two common type-walls that force a move swap. Accuracy is perfect, so you plan around guaranteed damage and guaranteed drops.
Who runs it
Espathra at 89% usage is the primary — effectively the sole competitive carrier at scale. It's Psychic-type itself, so Lumina Crash gets full STAB. The move fits the rest of its kit: Opportunist copies any stat boost the opponent gets, which means opponents can't safely set up in front of it; the Special Defense drop from Lumina Crash is the offensive side of that same pressure.
Some Espathra builds run Speed Boost to naturally outpace more and more threats over time, making sure Lumina Crash reliably goes first and the target can't switch out before taking the drop.
How to use it
Pair Espathra with a special attacker. The play is straightforward: Lumina Crash breaks the Special Defense, partner finishes in the same turn or the next. Against targets with middling Special Defense, a single Lumina Crash often brings them into OHKO range for a second special move. Against bulky specially defensive Pokémon, the -2 still cuts through enough to make follow-up hits viable where they weren't before.
Assault Vest raises Special Defense, which makes the absolute damage smaller, but the two-stage drop is not negated — it still applies. Clear Amulet blocks stat drops entirely; if the opponent runs one, Lumina Crash deals damage but the Special Defense drop doesn't happen.
Tips & strategy
Don't swap Lumina Crash out for a 'higher base power' alternative. Its damage-plus-drop package beats raw power on most targets — the value compounds the moment your partner gets to attack the debuffed target.
Ghost-types are a hard stop. Steel-types too. If either is sitting across from you, Espathra needs to switch out or use a coverage move instead. Pre-game, check whether the opponent's team has either type and decide whether Espathra can afford to be on the field against them.
On the same target, multiple Lumina Crash hits stack the drop to -4, -6 (the floor). Against high-bulk specially defensive walls, three hits essentially zeroes out their Special Defense wall entirely — after that, any special move threatens a KO.
