What it does
Aromatic Mist is a Fairy-type status move that raises an ally's Special Defense by one stage. The critical constraint: it can only target your own partner, never the opponent. Every time you use it, you're trading your action for your partner gaining a SpDef buff — no damage, no additional effect, no accuracy check required.
A +1 SpDef boost cuts incoming special damage by roughly one third. On a partner that was already surviving most hits, that extra stage might be irrelevant. On a Pokémon sitting at a SpDef threshold where one big special move would KO it, that single stage can mean the difference between it living or dying. The move doesn't get redirected by Follow Me or Rage Powder because it targets your side — opponents can't intercept it.
Who runs it
Alcremie carries Aromatic Mist at about 23% usage in Champions. That's well below its Decorate rate, which is near-universal — Aromatic Mist sits in slot 3 or 4, used when the matchup specifically demands it. Alcremie has decent bulk on the special side and a Fairy typing that makes it naturally durable against Dragon and Dark moves, so it can often afford the turn spent buffing rather than attacking.
How to use it
Use it when your partner is the one that needs to survive, and the threat on the other side is clearly special. If the opponent is running physical attackers, Aromatic Mist does nothing useful — your partner's SpDef doesn't matter against Close Combat or Earthquake. Save the move for situations where a spread special move like Dazzling Gleam or a high-powered special hit is about to land.
In most Alcremie teams, Decorate comes first — it boosts both Attack and Special Attack at once. Aromatic Mist fills in when the game state has stabilized and your partner needs dedicated SpDef support without you needing to buff Attack again.
Tips & strategy
Don't burn this move when your partner is already comfortable. A SpDef +1 is useful only because of what it prevents, not what it enables. The best turns to use it are when you can read a large special hit coming — turn 2 or 3 when the opponent's threat has become clear.
One practical note: if your partner uses Protect, you can't target them with Aromatic Mist that turn. Don't waste the action on a turn your partner is protecting — plan a turn ahead and use it when they're going to be active. The move is cheap to run and fills a specific gap that Decorate doesn't cover when you already have your offensive stats handled.
